08:18 am - Writer's Block: Winds of Change
Governor Christie of NJ. I personally blame him for the budget cuts that eliminated art from my son's school. 3 years later, still not back :(

On February 26, our son Trayvon Martin was shot and killed as he walked to a family member's home from a convenience store where he had just bought some candy. He was only 17 years-old.
Trayvon's killer, George Zimmerman, admitted to police that he shot Trayvon in the chest. Zimmerman, the community's self appointed "neighborhood watch leader," called the police to report a suspicious person when he saw Travyon, a young black man, walking from the store. But Zimmerman still hasn't been charged for murdering our son.
Trayvon was our hero. At the age 9, Trayvon pulled his father from a burning kitchen, saving his life. He loved sports and horseback riding. At only 17 he had a bright future ahead of him with dreams of attending college and becoming an aviation mechanic. Now that’s all gone.
When Zimmerman reported Trayvon to the police, they told him not to confront him. But he did anyway. All we know about what happened next is that our 17 year-old son, who was completely unarmed, was shot and killed.
It's been nearly two weeks and the Sanford Police have refused to arrest George Zimmerman. In their public statements, they even go so far as to stand up for the killer - saying he's "a college grad" who took a class in criminal justice.
Please join us in calling on Norman Wolfinger, Florida's 18th District State's Attorney, to investigate my son's murder and prosecute George Zimmerman for the shooting and killing of Trayvon Martin. Current Location: United States, New Jersey, Flanders Current Mood: aggravated

10:30 am - Camera Suggestions?
In the market for a new camera, my 7 MP Olympus is acting up and I lost my camera case Friday night at Izod Center (left it behind I think). I wonder if there are new cameras with the features I like (uses regular batteries, has a REAL viewfinder and optical zoom) still out there. Looking for a point and shoot plus camera not a DSLR. Suggestions welcomed. Posted via LiveJournal app for Android. Current Mood: curious

City Kitties is currently filled to capacity and in desperate need of foster homes -- people who can care for a cat for a minimum of three months (six months preferred) City Kitties pays all the vet bills. Their foster link is here. There are many cats with stories just as sad as Clark's who are looking for a person who will be kind to them.

08:24 am - Video games
The Wii is 99.00 on Black Friday at Walmart. I wonder if this the year we finally get a gaming console. Or should we look at the 199 xbox?
We had a scare where we thought Alans DSi was lost with all the games, but it turned out I'd taken it all away and forgot I did. Oddly enough he forgot also and was either playing my phones games or free online games on the PC. Since we thought it was lost, we ended up acquiring a 2nd DSi (used) and one of those 200 games in one cartridges that people concoct overseas. So now I'll have a DSi. Alan and I have joked for years I should get one. It will be black and not pink though! Posted via LiveJournal app for Android. 08:41 am - Which one doesn't belong
My alma matter WPI sent out mail looking for contributions from alumni.
This mailing talked about accomplishments of various alumni. One was involved in air plane design in the 1940s. Another came up with an early idea for airbags. A third was involved with the Hubble Space Telescope. The fourth alumn from the early 2000s was a founder of Foursquare. The last one was on the R&D team at Proctor and Gamble that developed the Swiffer! I'm still amused by the last one!Posted via LiveJournal app for Android.

08:20 pm - Third Grade
We had back to school night on Tuesday. Third grade is a big change from second. They start reading to learn (not learning to read) and dealing with teaching to the the test (NJ Ask here). Alan seems to be doing well, but he does seem to have more work to do in class and for homework. Did anyone else find such a change?Posted via LiveJournal app for Android. 04:24 am - Hurricane
The hurricane came. I prepared with water, filling the bath tub, gathering all the batteries, stocking up on food, even a hidden toy for Alan in case of no power driven amusements (cell phone, DS, tv, internet etc). Even got sandbags from the town and bagged my sunken patio door.
We were so lucky! We did not lose power! (I think we did in 1999 for Floyd) FIOS also held up just fine. Our condo complex is in one of the higher points in town fortunately and our patio didnt seem to get anything other than tree debris.
My MIL wasnt so lucky. She lives 15 minutes away. She has water in her basement (known issues, worse this time). She has no power due to a substation flood and isnt expected to be back for 5 to 7 days. Other friends in the area have lost power. We have offered to help out if needed with food, showers etc.
We drove to see her yesterday. Had to go a roundabout way due to a flooded area, but no major problems to get to her. We were surprised to see a supermarket open. They said they had a generator. Glad people came to work it also. We rented a movie "How to train a dragon" and saw it last night.
I am working from home Monday since NJ transit buses may be messed up. Glad my current place is cool on this.
I also have to pack for our cabin camping trip coming soon. Seems weird to camping after all this!

06:52 am - Reading I'm reading The Hunger Games trilogy now. I've read the first book, am 1/2 way through the 2nd book and have the third waiting. (I was derailed for a little while since our library system sent the 3rd book before the 2nd one, I had to wait for the 2nd one to come in).
I really like Katniss. As a character she's much better than Twilight's Bella Swan <g>. I like her male colleagues too (except for Peetas name).

01:30 pm - internet powers, activate! Originally posted by kythryne
Okay, people. I need you to take this viral, and fast.
We know someone in upstate New York who needs a good custody lawyer ASAP. I'm not at liberty to go into details publicly, but this woman is very afraid that her abusive boyfriend is going to get sole custody of her young child. She's presently being represented by a court-assigned lawyer who doesn't seem to care about the case, and she has very few resources left at this point. Her next hearing is on Thursday.
If you know a good lawyer in New York State who might be willing to take this case for a low fee or pro bono, or at least offer her advice or support, please let me know. If you don't know anyone, please repost this far and wide. As a mother and an abuse survivor, it makes me absolutely sick to my stomach to contemplate a child being left in the hands of an abuser.
I can be reached at kythryne@gmail.com if you have any leads or want to help.
The internet can work miracles. Let's go.

LiveJournal, Russia's blogging platform of choice, is sustaining biggest cyberattack attack in its history. Bloggers say the Kremlin wants to crack down on political discussion.
"LiveJournal, Russia’s most popular blogging platform, has been under a massive DDoS attack for the past few days. The attack has effectively wiped out Russia’s main refuge for unbridled political discussion, a hugely lively and extensive domain frequented by politicians, opposition activists and social commentators alike...
“The reason for attack is more than clear in this case — someone wants LiveJournal to disappear as a platform,” Ilya Dronov, development director at SUP, wrote in a post on his LiveJournal blog earlier this week. He said the hackers were hoping to push bloggers from LJ to social networks where “it's easier to fight individual users.”"
